Far more frightening in his ‘70s comic book appearances than his later media outings, the character of Wolverine was considered to be too violent and psychotic and was to be written out of the pages of Uncanny X-Men. Typically, upon provocation, Wolverine would threaten anyone with death. Disemboweling or dismemberment were his two most promised actions.
The idea was to kill Logan off but protest from comics’ great John Byrne (who started as co-plotter/artist on X-Men with issue 108) halted that plan. Byrne is Canadian and was eager to develop Wolverine, the first Canadian super hero. Being a huge fan of Byrne’s work since the age of five, I am biased but I feel he and writer Chris Claremont are the two main reasons for Wolverine’s success.
