I grew up in a heavily wooded area of Long Island and among owls, snakes, and giant spiders, we also had bats. As I walked the dog, they would swoop down at my head repeatedly on summer nights. So, I started walking with either a big stick or leftovers from my Giant Tinkertoy set. I'd swing at any bat (sometimes more than one) that would come at me but never hit one: they were too quick. Only later did I discover that if you just hold the stick in the air, the bat would hover around it for about 20 seconds and then fly off.
