Kurt Cobain

"He was an amazing guy, he was a complete gentleman. He was one of those people -- everybody's got them in their life -- somebody that you turn to when things aren't going so good."
- Mark Lanegan
"Cobain started life as a sunny child. "He got up every day with such joy that there was another day to be had," recalls his mother. "When we'd go downtown to the stores, he would sing to people. It kind of scared me because he had perceptions like I've never seen a small child have. He had life figured out really young. He knew life wasn't always fair. Kurt was focused on the world - he would be drawing in a coloring book, and the news would be on, and he was very attuned to that, and he was just three and a half." But Cobain's parents - a secretary & an auto mechanic - divorced when he was 8, and "it just destroyed his life," says his mother. "He changed completely. I think he was ashamed. And he became very inward - he just held everything in. He became real shy. It just devastated him. I think he's still suffering."
- Wendy Cobain as related by Michael Azerrad
"Wendy Cobain remarried and the addition of an erratic son to an already shaky environment proved too great a strain. On one occasion, after finding out that her husband had cheated on her, Wendy pointed a gun at his head and threatened to kill him. Both Kurt & his sister watched as she attempted unsuccessfully to load the weapon. Finally in frustration, she gathered all the firearms in the house, marched into the night and threw them in the Wishkah River. The next day, after paying two kids to fish them out, Kurt sold the guns for pocket cash. He used the money to buy his first amplifier."
